CAREER

Born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey. After leaving school, joined the family motorcycle business, raced motorbikes (grass track and road racing).-UK and New Zealand. Served in the Royal Air Force,(UK and Germany)as an aircraft engineer in Fighter command for 2 years.

1950 -1960: Took up residence in New Zealand. During this period, formed a semi-professional harmonica trio with Peter Nation, THE RHYTHMONICS, who were regularly on New Zealand radio (including recitals and solo broadcasts). First album released about 1960. Appeared in many live concerts and various shows.

Early 60s: After returning with family to the UK from New Zealand, signed a song contract with DICK JAMES MUSIC for compositions written and recorded whilst in New Zealand. Built a recording studio in South London in 1964 making several masters. Soon had first break with a song recorded by DICKIE VALENTINE through an association with FRANKIE VAUGHN and JOHNNY FRANZ, A&R Producer for DUSTY SPRINGFIELD and THE WALKER BROTHERS.

Early to mid 60s, met George Bellamy at Keith Prowse music publishers, Denmark Street, who gave me tremendous help and encouragement during the early period when I tried to break into the music industry as a writer/musician. George arranged, with his company, my first royalty advance for a song, later to be recorded by Dickie Valentine.

George Bellamy will be remembered best as the rhythm guitarist for the legendary Tornadoes. The first group that opened the door to the American charts with "Telstar", the Jo Meek epic. The British pop invasion that followed is now a bit of music history.

1966-1967: Signed songwriting agreement with EDWARD KASSNER MUSIC (on a weekly salaried retainer). During this period wrote several songs which were later recorded as single and album tracks, for example, RUBY MURRAY and KEN JONES.

1967-1968: Chief Recording Engineer for MORENO SOUND STUDIOS, London, and recorded such artists as CREAM, the ALAN PRICE SET and DUFFY POWERS, plus recorded a great number of well known television commercials. Also at this time, had a song called KISS KISS recorded by TOM JONES.

Signed as a writer to DICK JAMES MUSIC LTD., London, with Co writer Terry Dwyer for the next six years and had minor successes with THE TROGGS, THE LOVIN and a song called BABY COME CLOSER by THE LOOT which reached the top 30 (on the PAGE ONE label and ARIOLA, Germany).

1968-1969: Formed DOMINANT MUSIC, CRYSTAL RECORDS LTD AND CRYSTAL PUBLISHING CO with JEAN DOMMINNEY (Lilian Bushell). Became label Manager and PA to EMILE SHALLET, the Managing Director of MELODISC RECORDS, London (Bluebeat and FAB label) thus gaining considerable experience in the Rock Steady and Reggae scene from the very company that initiated the Reggae industry in Europe (before TROJAN RECORDS, PAMA or ISLAND RECORDS). This company had massive national chart successes and large record sales with PRINCE BUSTER on the BB label.

During this period signed a DOMINANT MUSIC sub-publishing deal with SPARTA/FLORIDA for several copyrights, including the Rock Steady hit SWAN LAKE by THE CATS (a big hit on the continent and made the national charts in the UK).

Mid to late 60s acquired office in Denmark Street WCI (Tin Pan Alley) and also in Charing Cross Road. These were all pretty tatty offices as was the norm at the time, and were hard to find for independent Writers and Producers during the music rush of this particular period. The area was always known as being the hub of the British Music Industry, and there was a great buzz just being there.

The major meeting place was in a small cafe called. The Giaconda where you often shared a table with Such notables as Tom Jones, The Pretty Things and many of the big names of the 60's.Never once saw a Beatle in there though, but certainly overheard a lot of crap being spoken(,but what's new in the Music Industry).

Worked with Tony Chapman, musician/producer, who incidentally was the original Rolling Stones drummer before Charlie Watts joined the group in those early days. The rolling stones biog shows the gigs where Tony played drums with Mick Jagger and co. Published several album productions for Tony through Dick James and Jacks Crystal Publishing Co, including the Johnny Coleman/ Terry Durham (poet/artist) album. "Crystal Telephone" and subsequent product for Decca Records. Tony introduced Jack to Decca Records boss, Dick Rowe with a view to making a harmonica album but unfortunately it didn't materialise for at that time. Jack was involved with a great number of projects. (in a word he blew it).

Also worked with Roy Ward from South London who became drummer for the group. City Boy, who had a massive Top 10 hit. Roy collaborated on several compositions with both Terry Dwyer and Jack Price. Incidentally, Roy Ward went on to work with Producer Mutt Lange, Shanai Twain's Producer and Husband.

1969-1971: CRYSTAL PUBLISHING entered into partnership with DICK JAMES MUSIC (the original BEATLES publisher) with JACK PRICE and DICK JAMES as equal partners. During this period, produced albums for PHILIPS, MERCURY, FONTANA REDIFUSION, PYE RECORDS, PRESIDENT RECORDS (JAYBOY LABEL), FLAMINGO MUSIC, SAGA RECORDS, as well as for own labels, SIOUX RECORDS and CRYSTAL RECORDS. These included rock and roll, folk R&B and Reggae music. Some reached the top 10 of the mid-price range of the album charts. Also at this time issued a Reggae album on the CRYSTAL LABEL for NOEL GAY MUSIC PUBLISHERS. Became Label Manager for ART AND SOUND LIMITED (SAGA RECORDS) London 1970-71.

By introducing the Reggae scene to Philips, Pye and Decca Records , he has been accredited to be the first person to make the music available nationwide to all record outlets instead of the limited distribution network which existed at the time.

Formed LANDESTER MUSIC Publishing Company in 1970. Signed a sub-publishing agreement which is still in existence with INTERSONG (now WARNER CHAPPELL).

Early 70's discovered Polly Brown singing with her group in South London. Made a demo on behalf other management in a West End Studio. The 3 tracks recorded were subsequently taken into the A & R department of Pye Records.and within a few days Polly Brown was given a recording contract. They were recorded as Pickitywitch, and their first single. That same bid feeling, was a Top 10 hit. Polly brown went on to record several other hits.

Also during this period published CONFUSCIOUS, the flip side to the Top 10 hit JIG A JIG by EAST OF EDEN on the DECCA label. Co wrote with Terry Dwyer, the instrumental PHAROAH'S WALK by EXODUS, which was used as background music to EMPEROR ROSKO's RADIO ONE CLUB during the launch of this station, as well as being released as a single on 3 separate labels during this period on the SIOUX, SAGA and TROJAN labels and also on compilation albums in 1971 and 1996.

1972-present: Worked predominantly as a writer in the popular music and light classical fields, developing several libraries of theme music for the film and TV industry. Commercial successes during this period include national and international jingles.

In 1996 re-launched Reggae label SIOUX RECORDS UK LIMITED and currently has three CD compilation albums on the market with two further releases imminent. In October 1996, was the first person to contact JOHN CROZIER of the Dunblane Committee and was a major part of the team that initiated the process behind the Dunblane record, KNOCKING ON HEAVENS DOOR, a number 1 hit during the Christmas period. Also negotiated the publishing deal with POLYGRAM ISLAND MUSIC COMPANY on behalf of the artist and writers.

1997-1998: Track on LEGENDARY TOM JONES 30'h ANNIVERSARY ALBUM and 2 new albums (SIOUX RECORDS) released on JET SET RECORDS in Europe. Played harmonica on several TV Drama series (CARLTON TV). Co-Produced, arranged and played harmonica and keyboards on "FRANCE AND BEYOND" album recorded by MONIQUE and released in January 1999.
